Calls to the Poison Information Center regarding nicotine pouches found in toddlers’ mouths are reported more than every other day, according to Lääkärilehti. By the end of September this year, the center had received a total of 325 inquiries related to nicotine pouches, with half of these involving children under the age of two.
The risk of poisoning from nicotine pouches is particularly significant for young children, explains Chief Physician and Associate Professor Tuomas Lilius to Lääkärilehti. He advises that if a child swallows a pouch, the absorption of nicotine can potentially be mitigated with activated charcoal.
