Chimney sweep Jyri Keski-Huikku has fallen from rooftops unexpectedly twice. During the first incident, he dislocated his shoulder, and in the second, he broke his coccyx. Such dangerous situations are not uncommon, often caused by improperly installed ladders or those that have been dislodged by snow loads. Keski-Huikku emphasizes the need for safe access to chimneys, outlining that many times, pathways are not properly constructed due to cost-cutting measures.

The most frequent cause of accidents, according to the Central Association of Chimney Sweeps, is poor-quality ladders. Even when ladders seem to be in good condition, they can be rotten or poorly secured, posing significant risks. Tapio Rinne, the CEO of Nokikaveri, points out that while it may seem safe to climb onto roofs in dry weather, wet or icy conditions create hazardous surfaces that require proper ladder support.

Currently, chimney sweeping season is in full swing. Industry professionals share alarming accounts of risks encountered, including falling icicles and injuries from sharp edges or debris. Some chimney sweeps report being put in compromising positions due to inadequate safety equipment.

Responsibility for roof safety measures lies with property owners. Proper documentation and care of safety equipment are crucial to preventing accidents, as noted by Pauliina Haapsaari, a senior lawyer at the Property Association.

Since the removal of the chimney sweeping system in 2019, the onus has been on homeowners to schedule services, leading to longer wait times, sometimes extending from weeks to months. Lauri Asikainen, a coordinator at the Central Association, recommends scheduling chimney sweeps during the winter months to avoid the rush and ensure efficient and timely service.
