People’s Party of Iceland reshuffles leadership ahead of 2024 parliamentary elections

In a significant reshuffle ahead of the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections, the People’s Party of Iceland will not be retaining the leadership positions of two of its sitting members, Jakob Frímann Magnússon and Tómas A. Tómasson. Taking a prominent place on the party’s list is Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson, the chairman of the VR union, who aims to lead the party’s Reykjavik list.

Ragnar confirmed to media that his candidacy will not interfere with his responsibilities at VR. Tómas shared that he received a call informing him he would not be included on the party’s list this time, but emphasized that serving alongside Inga Sæland in Parliament was an honor.

Candidate announcements are piling up as the week progresses, revealing a clearer picture of the political landscape. Following extensive changes within the Independence Party, its top positions in Reykjavik are expected to remain largely unchanged compared to the last election. Brynjar Níelsson is set to join the list and is likely to secure the third position, similar to 2021, although he did not secure a seat then. Current polling indicates he may face challenges again.

Additionally, the Left-Green Movement is experiencing its own shifts, with five out of eight MPs elected last time opting not to run again, including prominent figures like Katrín Jakobsdóttir. Meanwhile, several newcomers are stepping forward, such as Eva Dögg Davíðsdóttir, who stepped in for Katrín but has not yet indicated whether she will pursue a spot on the list.

The Social Democratic Alliance has announced that Alma Möller will head the South West District list, with Guðmundur Ari Sigurjónsson and Þórunn Sveinbjarnardóttir following close behind. Further details on candidate lists for various parties will be revealed in the coming days.
