Ähtäri City Council addressed the proposals of a temporary committee on Monday evening regarding the dismissal of the entire city council leadership and the audit committee’s chairmanship. The background stems from a lack of confidence in two members of the Finns Party, Juha Nortunen and Jarkko Salo, who were expected to resign voluntarily, but did not. Consequently, the process moved forward with the establishment of a temporary committee.

Juha Nortunen is a member of the city council, while Jarkko Salo serves as the deputy chair of the audit committee. During the council meeting, Chair Kauko Kantola (Center Party) urged that discussions remain orderly. The debate began around 7 PM, initially focusing on the dismissal of the audit committee leadership. The committee proposed that due to a lack of trust, the audit committee’s chair should be removed.

Council Chair Leena Mäenpää presented a report outlining the events from both the audit committee’s and the city council’s perspectives. Jarkko Salo highlighted an article from Yle during his remarks, asserting that he has acted in the best interest of the residents. Mäenpää emphasized that the current decision relates to political trust.

City Manager Perttu Sonninen refrained from commenting on the specifics, noting that this matter involves political confidence. Kantola remarked that accusations of misconduct have arisen post-democratic decision-making, while Sirpa Leinonen (Center Party) questioned if officials had misused their positions. Mikko Savola (Center Party) stressed the significance of the audit committee and the responsibility that comes with power.

The discussion culminated in a vote prompted by Seppo Laine’s (Left Alliance) counterproposal against the dismissals. Ultimately, the original motion passed with a vote of 18-6, and three council members abstained. Following this, it was approved to remove not only the leadership but also other members of the audit committee.

Seppo Laine also proposed that the city council maintain its confidence, but this motion was defeated; 19 council members voted for the council’s dismissal, with seven opposing or abstaining. Thus, the city council no longer holds the confidence of the governing body.
