Youth missing after fire at rehabilitation center Stuðlar in Iceland

Following a fire at the rehabilitation center Stuðlar, two youths who were previously under supervision went missing after being taken home. The police initiated a search for six young people over the weekend, two of whom were inside Stuðlar when the incident occurred.

The young people were transported home, where they subsequently fled. One of the missing individuals was located at noon today, while the other remains unaccounted for. A third youth connected to this group was also searched for but returned home on their own.

Reports indicate that a 15-year-old boy, who had been at the center since August, ran away just 20 minutes after being driven home, having been missing for two days. Tragically, a 17-year-old boy lost his life in the fire, and a staff member sustained injuries. Investigations into the cause of the blaze are ongoing.

At the time of the fire, there were seven youths at Stuðlar, including four in emergency care. Due to damage from the fire, the center arranged alternative accommodations for the youths, either at home or at another facility. The acting director of Stuðlar confirmed that all children have been provided shelter and that staff are doing their best to support them.
