Negotiations postponed as Icelandic Teachers’ Union faces legal challenge from Association of Icelandic Municipalities

A negotiation meeting between the Icelandic Teachers’ Union and the Association of Icelandic Municipalities was briefly held this morning but was postponed. The delay was due to a primary hearing scheduled at the Labour Court regarding the legality of a strike notice issued by the Teachers’ Union.

The Association of Icelandic Municipalities has challenged this strike notice, as the union has announced a strike set to commence at eight schools on October 29. The main proceedings for this matter are expected to take place in the afternoon at the Labour Court.

Magnús Þór Jónsson commented that the meeting at the Mediation Office was short and did not yield any advancements in the dispute. He stated that the future of negotiations would depend on the court’s ruling on the matter. The challenge from the Association of Icelandic Municipalities contends that the Teachers’ Union did not submit a formal demand before announcing the strike, an assertion that the union disputes.

This conflict has raised concerns as educators and local authorities seek a resolution amid ongoing tensions in the education sector.
