Brynjar Níelsson expected to return to politics with Independence Party in Iceland

Brynjar Níelsson, a former member of the Icelandic Independence Party, is expected to make a return to politics by securing a position on the party’s list for the upcoming November elections. After serving as an alternate member of parliament in 2021, he resigned from this role in September.

In the lead-up to the 2024 parliamentary elections, party lists for Reykjavik will be unveiled on Thursday, with reports suggesting that Brynjar is likely to be placed in the third position for the North Reykjavik constituency. It is anticipated that Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson and Áslaug Arna Sigurbjörnsdóttir will continue as the lead candidates, with Guðlaugur representing North Reykjavik and Áslaug representing South Reykjavik.

In recent developments, the Independence Party’s lists in other constituencies were announced over the weekend, causing some upheaval within the party. Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, the party’s deputy chair, triumphed over Jón Gunnarsson in the contest for the second spot in the Southwest constituency. Jón has opted not to take the third position offered to him. Additionally, several other party members, including Teitur Björn Einarsson, Ásmundur Friðriksson, and Birgir Þórarinsson, will not be serving in the parliament any longer.

Other political parties are also finalizing their lists. The People’s Party is set to announce its candidates today, while the Pirates’ primary elections will conclude tomorrow. The Left-Green Movement plans to present its list tomorrow for the Southwest constituency, and the Centre Party will reveal its candidates later this week. The Reform Party aims to announce its list before the weekend, followed by the Progressive Party and the Social Democrats over the weekend.
