Coastal homeowners in Denmark face increased flood risks from climate change, researchers warn

Coastal properties often evoke dreams of sea views, but such vistas can quickly turn into nightmares, as many homeowners in Denmark experienced a year ago when a severe storm surge inundated the southern coast, flooding homes. Predictions indicate that future conditions could worsen. Climate change is anticipated to elevate sea levels, leading to more frequent and severe storm surges.
Researchers from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Navigating 360 project focused on the coastal towns of Kalundborg, Nakskov, and Kerteminde to better understand local impacts of climate change. According to Kirsten Halsnæs, a professor in climate and economics at DTU, while the last storm surge was significant, the lack of meaningful action since implies complacency. She warns that the situation will worsen with higher water levels in the future.
A report exploring potential scenarios over the next 50 years predicts dire consequences, particularly if coastal defenses are not implemented. In the worst-case scenario, a once-in-a-century storm surge could see water levels rise over three meters, resulting in damages amounting to 8.6 billion kroner (around $1.3 billion), with over 5,000 homes flooded and thousands of residents displaced.
The report also examines a less severe, more frequent storm surge scenario, which could still inflict damages of 4.8 billion kroner with significant flooding of residential properties. Current assessments of storm surge risks are derived from existing data and projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
As municipalities develop coastal protection plans, many struggle to secure funding, emphasizing the need for government support in addressing these escalating challenges.
