Ähtäri Zoo’s panda house closes as Lumi and Pyry prepare for move to quarantine

Monday 21st October 2024 on 01:14 in Finland

The Ähtäri Zoo’s panda house will be open for the last time today. Earlier this week, giant pandas Lumi and Pyry are set to be moved to quarantine, where they will remain for at least 30 days. The final destination for the pandas in China has not yet been determined, as stated by Ähtäri Zoo’s director, Marko Haapakoski.

Lumi and Pyry have been part of the zoo since 2018. The zoo announced in September that the pandas would be returning earlier than planned and that their conservation program would come to an end due to financial difficulties. The original rental agreement for the pandas at Ähtäri was intended to last for 15 years.
