A new political movement named Græningjar (Greens) is being established in Iceland, focusing primarily on climate issues. Kikka Sigurðardóttir, one of the founders and known for her work on the platform Ávaxtakörfan, is leading efforts with a team to form the party. The official founding meeting will take place today, where it is expected that Græningjar will aim to participate in elections across as many constituencies as possible. With the formation of this party, there will now be a total of eleven parties vying for seats in the Icelandic Parliament, four of which are new entrants.

Kikka emphasizes the party’s mission to prioritize green solutions over profit-driven interests. “We are just a group of people coming together to create a party that focuses on sustainable solutions rather than greed,” she stated. The meeting will commence at 5 PM at the Valkyrjan restaurant in Reykjavík.

Græningjar marks the twelfth party to announce its candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary elections and is the fourth party not currently represented in Parliament. Other notable parties include the Socialists, Responsible Future, and the Democracy Party.

Kikka identified key platform issues encompassing more emphasis on climate change, nature conservation, animal protection, and sustainability, as well as advocating for fair wages and housing for all citizens. When asked about the feasibility of running in every constituency, she assured attendees, “We will do what we can in the time we have. I encourage everyone to come to the meeting or find us on Facebook and join us.”
