The Foreign Minister of Iceland, Thordis Kolbrun Reykfjord Gylfadottir, has announced plans to open an embassy in Madrid, Spain, next year. She revealed this decision after a discussion with her Spanish counterpart, Jose Manuel Albares. Gylfadottir took to Twitter to share the news, stating that the establishment of an Icelandic embassy in Spain symbolizes the strengthening ties between the two nations.

Just over a week ago, in response to a query from Gisli Rafn Olafsson, a member of the Pirate Party in the Icelandic Parliament, about the establishment of an embassy or consulate in Spain, the Foreign Minister revealed that about 80% of inquiries and tasks received by the ministry’s citizen service were assistance requests from Spain. The exact number of requests received by Iceland’s eleven elected representatives in Spain is unknown, but it is estimated that the workload significantly exceeds what is typically expected. The establishment of an embassy is seen as a strategic move to streamline these processes and strengthen diplomatic ties.
