West Iceland braces for heavy rain and landslides, East Iceland to enjoy mild weather
Weather warnings have been issued for Faxaflói and Breiðafjörður in West Iceland due to the forecast of heavy rain. People are advised to avoid vulnerable areas and steep mountain slopes. In contrast, East Iceland is expected to enjoy unusually mild weather with warm temperatures.
Conditions in West Iceland today are predicted to be quite severe with a strong area of precipitation. Heavy rainfall and the consequent increase in water levels are anticipated in Snæfellsnes and the southern Westfjords. A yellow weather warning is in effect for Faxaflói until tonight and for Breiðafjörður until the early morning. Rivers and streams are likely to swell significantly, resulting in difficult crossings, and there is an increased risk of landslides and rock falls. People are therefore advised to avoid vulnerable areas and steep mountain slopes in these areas.
Weather in other parts of the country will be less severe, with fog or light rain in some places, but generally dry and bright in the northeast. Temperatures will range from 11 to 23 degrees, warmest in East Iceland.
A low-pressure area over the Greenland Sea and high pressure south of the Faroe Islands will continue to bring warmer southern winds to the country. Tomorrow, there will be a continuation of cold or strengthening winds from the south in the west of the country. Precipitation will be significantly less than today, with fog or slight rain at times.
The forecast for East Iceland is very good, predicting unusually mild weather, light winds, and clear weather. Temperatures there could reach 25 degrees in the best conditions.
Mild and bright weather is expected in most parts of the country on Monday.
