The Education Union in Drammen is facing criticism from its own members regarding a lack of clarity on proposed school closures. Teachers at Danvik School, which is suggested for closure, expressed their disappointment and alarm in a letter to the union. Joakim Bjørklund, a teacher at Brandengen School, supports this criticism, claiming that the union’s public statements have missed the mark entirely.

Kari Coventry, the leader of the Education Union in Drammen, emphasized their commitment to advocating for teachers’ salaries and working conditions. Many educators and parents worry that the union’s stance could lend support to a proposal that, in the worst-case scenario, could lead to school closures. Coventry acknowledged that political parties are actively involved in the discussions and stated that correcting the situation is a priority for the union.

Teachers from Danvik voiced in their letter that it should not be the union’s role to promote unpopular proposals from the administration. Bjørklund criticized the union for their response to the media, claiming it gave the impression that while school closures are regrettable, they are a necessary evil. He argued that the union should not be part of the administration’s advisory committee regarding these closures, suggesting that they should have shown clear solidarity with affected students and parents.

Coventry clarified that the union does not wish to see any schools shut down and reaffirmed their commitment to improving conditions for teachers. While many educators fear that the union’s earlier stance may lead to a decline in membership, Bjørklund confirmed his intention to remain part of the union, emphasizing the importance of a strong union presence in the workplace. The fate of the proposed school closures in Drammen remains undecided, with ongoing discussions among local political parties.
