Kuopio has introduced a new tourist attraction around its controversial nature reserve, with the Puijo area seeing an influx of visitors this year. In the past, the development of Puijo sparked significant debate in the city, balancing nature conservation against tourism. However, the latest initiative has led to a resurgence in foot traffic.

The company managing the area has created thematic trails, with the Halloween-themed route attracting thousands of visitors within its first few days. This trail, mostly free of charge, covers approximately 300 meters near the observation tower. Visitors can purchase tickets to access the tower and enjoy stunning views, while descending the stairs features added horror elements, illuminated to match the theme.

Many families, including 15-year-old Sara Lukinkin, have found the Halloween trail appealing for all ages. Among the visitors were Erja Huttunen from Iisalmi and her family, who were surprised by the additional offerings available during their visit to admire autumn foliage.

The Puijo Peak area has hosted various thematic trails before, such as the traditional elf trail during Christmas, incorporating local art along the way. The company has collaborated with local universities and rescue services to emphasize responsibility and safety during previous events. This marks the third consecutive year for the Halloween theme.

Discussions about Puijo’s future had been ongoing for about 20 years, with strong opinions on either preserving its natural state or enhancing its appeal to tourists. Plans have included hotels and glass igloos. Since its founding in 2019, Puijo Peak aims to provide experiences year-round, capitalizing on the darkness of autumn as a source of inspiration and community engagement.
