Möller seeks leadership of Social Democratic Alliance ahead of 2024 elections in Iceland

Alma Möller, the Chief Epidemiologist of Iceland, is now vying to lead the Social Democratic Alliance’s list for the Southwest constituency in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections. Initially, Möller had expressed interest in the second spot on the list, but following recent events, she has shifted her ambitions to the top position.

The contest for leadership of the Alliance’s list has intensified, particularly between Möller and Þórunn Sveinbjarnardóttir, a current MP who previously led the list in the last parliamentary elections. During those elections, the Alliance secured one seat in the constituency, but current polls suggest a potential increase in representation next time around.

In an unexpected announcement, Guðmundur Árni Stefánsson, the deputy chairman of the Alliance, revealed that due to health issues, he would not be pursuing a top position on the list or any upper-tier seat. He has publicly voiced his support for Möller’s candidacy. “Due to temporary health reasons, I have decided not to seek leadership of the list,” he stated, expressing his backing for Möller.

Following this development, Möller confirmed her candidacy for the leadership of the list, acknowledging the encouragement she has received from various constituents, including Stefánsson. She noted that she will temporarily step away from her role as Chief Epidemiologist once the final candidate list is submitted, with Guðrún Aspelund, the Chief Epidemiologist, stepping in during her absence.
