Lappeenranta’s renowned sandcastle faces challenges due to vandalism and rock-infused sand
The renowned sandcastle in Lappeenranta, located near the Fortress, is once again filled with sculptures created by artists. However, this year, the sandcastle has caused some headaches for the artists due to vandalism and big rocks mixed in the sand, which hinder the construction of sculptures.
The name of this year’s sandcastle is “Lappeenranta – The Heart of Saimaa.” The sandcastle has recently been subject to vandalism, with children and even adults attempting to climb onto the sculptures. Some individuals have even tried to hug the sculptures, which they cannot withstand. One of the sculptures, a fishing figure, even had its head detached.
Artists have used the same sand for their sculptures in the sandcastle for nearly 20 years. Although new sand is brought to the area annually, it is only in small amounts. At the end of summer, the sand is collected and stored in a large pile for the winter. In the spring, artists begin sculpting from the pile again. Over the years, large rocks have mixed with the sand, which can unexpectedly ruin a sculpture if it emerges where it shouldn’t.
The molds used for sculpting are also a problem. They are at least 15 years old and have loosened over the years. It is hoped that new molds can be acquired from the city for the artists to use.
The city of Lappeenranta is considering purchasing new molds. It may also buy more new sand next year so that artists can better complete their work. However, old sand will continue to be recycled, which is an environmentally friendly action. The city views the sandcastle as a unique feature, which is not going anywhere.
