Sigurður Ingi’s strategic gamble for parliamentary seat in South Constituency, Iceland

In the lead-up to the 2024 parliamentary elections, political analyst Ólafur Þ. Harðarson believes that Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, chairman of the Progressive Party, has a decent chance of securing a seat in parliament, despite being positioned second on the party’s list for the South Constituency behind Halla Hrund Logadóttir, the party’s energy policy director and presidential candidate.

In a recent Facebook announcement, Sigurður Ingi declared his decision to allow Halla Hrund to take the top spot on the list, emphasizing a willingness to take significant risks to change the party’s current standing, as polling suggests their chances of winning seats in the South Constituency are low.

“This is a strategic move, particularly as a show of solidarity and commitment to the party’s success,” Harðarson noted, recognizing that typically the party leader occupies the top position. While there are instances where leaders opt for what is termed a “battle seat,” this decision could bolster morale among party members.

Harðarson expressed uncertainty about whether this strategic gamble will influence the overall election outcome but acknowledged its potential to attract attention and resonate positively with voters. He remains cautiously optimistic about Sigurður Ingi’s prospects. “I believe he has a reasonable chance of being elected even from the second position,” he stated, recalling that the party previously secured three seats in the region, making the situation far from hopeless despite current unfavorable polling.
