Samfylkingin leads political landscape in Iceland with 25% voter support

In a recent poll conducted by Prósents, Samfylkingin (The Socialist Party) is the leading political party in Iceland, garnering almost 25% of voter support. This marks a slight decrease from the organization’s previous rating in a poll conducted between September 18 and October 3. The Independence Party follows in second place, capturing 15.6%, while the Centre Party holds 15.1%.

The poll also shows WeMove with a support of 14.1%, and the People’s Party at 10.8%. The Progress Party is recorded at 6.2%, and the Pirates at 6.1%. Meanwhile, the Left-Green Movement stands at only 2.3%, which suggests they would fail to secure a seat in parliament. The Socialist Party is polling at 4.2%, and the newly established Democracy Party, led by Arnar Þór Jónsson, has nearly 1%.

Additionally, another polling organization, Maskína, reported similar results, indicating Samfylkingin as the leading party with 22.8% in a survey conducted from October 2 to 18. In a later survey conducted after government dissolution, from October 15 to 18, the party’s support dipped slightly to just under 22%.

The continued decline in voter support for the ruling coalition’s three parties raises concerns as Iceland approaches the parliamentary elections in 2024.
