Iceland poll reveals significant shifts in party standings ahead of 2024 parliamentary elections

Ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections in Iceland, a new poll from Maskína indicates significant shifts in party standings. Although the Left-Green Movement (Vinstrihreyfingin) remains the largest party, its support has decreased noticeably since June when it peaked at 27 percent. Currently, it is at just under 22 percent, maintaining a lead over the Progressive Party (Framsókn), which stands at approximately 8 percent.

The Centre Party (Miðflokkurinn) is showing robust support, at 17.7 percent, while the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) and the newly established Reform Party (Viðreisn) are closely matched, each around 14 percent. Other parties, including the People’s Party (Flokkur fólksins) and various leftist groups, gather just over 5 percent.

Interestingly, the gap between the Independence Party and the Reform Party is not statistically significant, with margins of error near 2 percent. The Democracy Party, headed by Arnar Þór Jónsson, garnered 2 percent in this poll.

With elections approaching, it is anticipated that party support may fluctuate further in the coming weeks, particularly following the recent dissolution of the government, which could heavily influence voter sentiment as Icelanders prepare to cast their ballots.
