Iceland adjusts parliamentary seats for 2024 elections, reducing Northwest representation

In the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections in Iceland, the number of seats in the Northwest constituency will decrease from eight to seven, with one seat moved to the Southwest constituency, which will then have a total of 14 seats. The chairwoman of the National Electoral Commission, Kristín Edwald, indicated that preparations for the elections are progressing well.

Following the 2021 elections, the commission decided to adjust the number of parliamentary seats based on the number of registered voters in each constituency. The Northwest will now feature six constituency seats and one compensation seat, while the Southwest will have twelve constituency seats and two compensation seats. The number of seats in other constituencies remains unchanged, with eleven seats in each of the Reykjavík constituencies and ten in the South and Northeast constituencies.

The nomination lists for candidates are now open on the election website, similar to the presidential elections. Political groups intending to run can begin gathering endorsements online, with a submission deadline set for October 31 at noon. The process of validating nominations will follow, while early voting will commence on November 7, leading up to the main election day on November 30.

Kristín emphasized that the electoral staff is well-prepared, reflecting on changes made since the electoral law reform in 2022. She reassured that the restructuring of plans for this election has been manageable due to the competent team working efficiently.
