Nils Henrik Buljo excited about new theater building in Kautokeino, Norway
Nils Henrik Buljo, an actor at the Beaivváš Sámi National Theatre, expressed his excitement about working in their newly opened building, stating that leaving work feels almost sad now. During a tour of the facilities, he proudly pointed out the main hall, which accommodates 200 guests.
Since joining Beaivváš in 1998, Buljo has enjoyed his long-term role, emphasizing the convenience of the new venue. Previously, actors had to traverse 300 meters in freezing conditions to access costumes at their old location. The new premises allow for such tasks under much more comfortable conditions.
Moving through the theater’s corridors, Buljo highlighted the thoughtfully designed rehearsal space, which can also host intimate performances complete with candlelight and beverages. He praised the new building for its suitability for theater operations and excellent indoor climate.
Officially opened on August 21, 2023, the new theater also houses a Sámi high school and reindeer husbandry school. Established in 1981 in Kautokeino, Beaivváš is Norway’s only professional theater that performs in the Sámi language.
Currently, the theater is rehearsing for the new play “Ædnan,” written by the renowned Sámi author Linnea Axelsson. This epic depicts the intertwined fates of two Sámi families, reflecting the modern history of the Sámi people from the early 20th century to today.
Rolf Degerlund, the former theater director, expressed pride in the new venue, saying that he has dedicated five years to preparing this latest production, which will premiere on November 1. “Ædnan” will have ten performances in Kautokeino, with free bus services provided for audiences traveling from various regions of Sápmi. Degerlund urges theater enthusiasts to attend, emphasizing the importance of showing support for their artistic endeavors.
