Traffic chaos reported at busy intersection in Turku, Finland

The intersection of Tampereentie and Satakunnantie is one of the busiest areas in Turku, with approximately 40,000 vehicles passing through daily. In May, the lanes at the intersection were altered, leading to confusion and difficulties for drivers. “There have been problematic situations, as people are unsure of how to navigate the area. Near-miss incidents occur daily,” stated Senior Constable Kristian Vidjeskog from the Southwestern Finland Police.

The changes to the winding lanes, along with a very short straight lane and poorly visible signs, have significantly contributed to congestion. “It’s unclear what Turku’s traffic planners were thinking, but from a police perspective, there’s room for improvement,” Vidjeskog commented.

Tuomas Turpeinen, the city’s chief builder, acknowledged that the intersection near Aninkaisten Bridge has been problematic since spring. While serious accidents have been avoided, feedback has been received primarily regarding the lane changes. Many drivers are still following the old markings, leading to confusion. Residents have expressed their views on the city’s feedback page, with comments highlighting the chaotic driving conditions and concerns about winter when lane markings may become obscured by snow.

Particularly problematic is that some drivers adhere strictly to the lane markings, while others change lanes abruptly. Turpeinen clarified that while drivers can switch lanes before the traffic signals, caution is advised around other vehicles. The straight lane’s shortness has also been an issue, leading to blockage in adjacent lanes.

Turpeinen assured that citizen feedback is being considered for improvements, although major changes to the lane organization are not planned. A curb modification was made to prevent straight driving from the left lane intended for turns. He believes that with traffic to Köydenpunojankatu disrupted due to nearby construction, the issues may soon ease.
