At a state council meeting held at Bessastaðir, the Left-Green Movement officially announced their withdrawal from the interim government led by Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson. This meeting marked the first state council under the new presidency of Halla Tómasdóttir.

Following the discussions, Svandís Svavarsdóttir, the chair of the Left-Green Party, indicated that her party may not support the government’s budget proposals. The interim government had previously announced its decision to seek election, leading to new elections set for November 30.

Bjarni Benediktsson expressed excitement over the upcoming elections, emphasizing the need for a democratic society where differing opinions are respected. He stated that the coalition’s dissolution was a necessary political decision, and he acknowledged the underlying tensions that led to this outcome.

As ministers gathered at Bessastaðir for what is seen as a significant moment, mixed emotions were apparent among them. Some expressed disappointment over the government’s end, wishing for more time to accomplish pending tasks, particularly concerning educational reforms and budget work.

Several ministers mentioned their gratitude for their years of service while acknowledging the difficulties of collaboration within the coalition. Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson noted the challenges faced but also appreciated the unique experience of working together in governance.

The state council concluded after confirming the official termination of the current government, setting the stage for potential changes in Iceland’s political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.
