Police report potential military weapons from Ukraine infiltrating Finnish criminal networks
The police in Finland have reportedly received information suggesting that military weapons may have already entered the country from Ukraine. This revelation comes from a recent analysis report by the Police Administration concerning firearms. According to the report, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) possesses intelligence-based indicators that military weapons from Ukraine have reached criminals in Finland.
In October 2022, the NBI first alerted the public about the potential for weapons from Ukraine to fall into the hands of Finnish criminals, a claim that was later denied by Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The NBI later clarified that there is no evidence of weapons being smuggled from Ukraine that are part of military aid.
The report warns that the war in Ukraine could have unforeseen consequences for crime within the EU region. The police have indicated that various risks may escalate if the conflict either pauses or concludes. As fighting decreases in Europe, there is a concern that more drugs and firearms may circulate, potentially reaching criminal gangs.
Additionally, the Police Administration’s report highlights a notable increase in firearm-related crimes in Finland during April and August of this year, marking the highest rates since early 2022. While there has been a long-term upward trend in overall firearm offenses, the numbers early this year were lower than those recorded in early 2021.
The report also reveals a troubling trend where violence has shifted from private homes to public spaces. In contrast to historical instances of shootings linked to organized crime, today, individuals with criminal backgrounds appear to be perpetrating offenses openly in the streets. It is emphasized that only a small fraction of firearms offenses are severe violent crimes, such as aggravated robberies or homicides. Statistics show that approximately five percent of serious violent crime cases in Finland involve a firearm.
