Teachers at Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík vote for strike if government agreements not reached

Teachers at the Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík (MR) have voted to go on strike if agreements with the government and local municipalities are not reached by October 29. As a result, strike actions have been announced across ten schools at the end of this month and the beginning of next month.

The voting process at MR concluded today, with 81 percent in favor of the strike and a turnout of 93 percent. Consequently, temporary strikes are scheduled for ten schools, including MR itself and two high schools: Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands, which will strike from October 29 until December 20, and MR, which will be on strike from November 11 until December 20.

In addition, a temporary strike has also been announced at the Tónlistarskóli Ísafjarðar, scheduled for the same period as the other schools. Three elementary schools—Áslandsskóli, Laugalækjarskóli, and Lundarskóli—will participate in strikes from October 29 to November 22. Furthermore, indefinite strikes will take place at four preschools starting October 29: Leikskóli Seltjarnarness, Holt in Reykjanesbær, Drafnarsteinn in Reykjavík, and Ársalir in Sauðárkrókur.

The ongoing dispute is currently being mediated by the national mediator’s office.
