Taneli Ristmeri, a 34-year-old entrepreneur from Tampere, has turned childhood dreams into reality by winning the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award from Finnish Entrepreneurs. His company, Buildie, has revolutionized the quality assurance process in infrastructure construction and helped the public sector apply principles of the green transition. Buildie enables clients to monitor construction quality and site activities through photographs.

Ristmeri emphasizes the importance of quality control, noting that the average lifespan of water infrastructure in Finland is 50 years while materials can last over a century. He believes that a significant portion of this lifespan is lost during the construction and installation phases due to quality issues.

Buildie is currently used in around 100 municipalities across Finland and has a workforce of 31 in Finland and two in Sweden. Ristmeri’s journey to entrepreneurship began after he was elected as a team leader during his military service, which bolstered his self-confidence. He initially trained as a carpenter but felt out of place on construction sites.

He found his calling when he started documenting work phases and quality issues through photos, thus conceiving the idea behind Buildie. He encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to discover their passions and views entrepreneurship as a means to achieve personal goals, rather than an end in itself.

Ristmeri is aware of the challenges in the construction industry and aims to make Buildie the preferred partner for ensuring quality and lifecycle management in construction projects. He envisions expanding to a company with an annual turnover of ten million euros, employing 60 to 70 people across the Nordics. His dedication demands long working hours, often sacrificing personal plans for the sake of his business.
