Reykjavík City Council reverses parking fee requirement on Aragata, Oddagata, and Saemundargata
The Reykjavík City Environmental and Planning Council has decided to reverse the parking fee requirement for spaces on Aragata, Oddagata, and Saemundargata. This decision will remain in effect until the University of Iceland reintroduces parking fees on its premises.
The proposal to rescind the fees reflects the council’s assessment of the situation in Vatnsmyrinni, particularly as the University of Iceland has postponed implementing parking charges. The city plans to wait until the university begins collecting fees again.
A representative from the Left-Green Movement abstained during the vote on this proposal. Meanwhile, members of the People’s Party expressed that Reykjavík City should extend the fee cancellation around all schools and healthcare facilities, citing excessive financial burdens on those who rely on cars, especially when public transport remains inadequate.
The council has reaffirmed the cancellation of charges in the specified blue zone areas: Aragata, Oddagata, and Saemundargata. However, the parking fees on four other streets—Egilsgata, Eiriksgata near Hallgrímskirkja, Seljavegur, and Vesturgata between Ananaust and Styrimannastigur—will remain unchanged following a meeting on June 12th.
Plans were in motion to implement parking fees at the University of Iceland this fall, but the timeline was delayed due to ongoing appeals regarding service contract bids with the city. The university council’s minutes from October 3rd indicate that fee collection is now aimed to commence after the New Year.
