All students have the right to a safe and focused educational environment, according to the Swedish National Agency for Education. However, the reality for many students is quite different. Reports from sixth graders indicate frequent conflicts, often occurring between girls and boys. Teachers have resorted to installing movable walls in classrooms to minimize distractions and disputes.

An investigation commissioned by SVT revealed that 70% of middle school students experience difficulties concentrating due to classroom disruptions, with 25% stating they struggle with this daily. A fourth grader described a chaotic classroom situation, mentioning arguments and inappropriate language that required the teacher to intervene multiple times.

Anna Olskog, president of the Swedish Teachers’ Union, acknowledges the challenges in maintaining focus within middle school classrooms. She attributes some issues to systemic problems resulting from budget cuts and organizational streamlining. This has led to a shortage of teachers, leaving one educator responsible for a large group of students, making classroom management challenging. Olskog agrees that issues related to leadership and conflict resolution need improvement in teacher education, but asserts that the responsibility cannot solely rest with individual teachers; it is a systemic failure affecting teachers, students, and society at large.

The investigation conducted by Verian included 738 online interviews with middle school students, whose parents are part of a nationally representative panel. The key question posed was whether students faced challenges concentrating due to disruptions during lessons, and the survey was conducted from September 20-27, 2024.
