In the lead-up to the 2024 parliamentary elections, a decision was made during a government meeting in Iceland to redistribute ministerial responsibilities among government officials. Finance Minister Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson will take over the Ministry of Infrastructure, while Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson will assume responsibility for both the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor.

This restructuring was announced by Bjarni Benediktsson following a government meeting that concluded shortly after 5 PM. He clarified that the ministers from the Left-Green Movement (VG) would continue in their roles until new appointments are made, as each ministry must have a minister. Bjarni mentioned that formal proposals were prepared during the meeting to determine who would take over the vacant positions, and these proposals will be forwarded to the President for confirmation in the State Council.

Bjarni also indicated his intention to request a State Council meeting the following day to expedite the process.

As Iceland gears up for its parliamentary elections, political dynamics are shifting, with existing ministers realigning their responsibilities ahead of potential new appointments.
