While Mjøndalen fights for its existence in Norway’s second-tier football league, the club has initiated a street team that faces even more challenging battles. The team, known as “Bruntrøyene,” has been established for individuals who have had, or currently face, issues related to substance abuse.

Stian Nedberg from Mjøndalen IF emphasizes the importance of offering participants a stable routine and a safe, healthy environment. The street team practices twice a week, with the first sessions attracting six to seven players.

“We aim to provide them with the camaraderie and security that being part of a team brings. Some members of our coaching group assist with cooking, enabling us to share a lunch after practice,” says Nedberg. Currently, only men have signed up, but they hope to attract women as well. “We welcome women; having them on the team would positively enhance the atmosphere.”

Before launching the initiative, the club connected with other organizations that have launched similar programs to learn from their experiences. Some players initially lacked interest in football but eventually developed a passion for the sport, noted Nedberg.

While football is central to the initiative, the primary focus is on inclusion. “It’s great if they enjoy the game, but that’s not the main goal. There’s a place for everyone, whether as a player, team leader, or equipment manager. Regardless of how one contributes, they are part of the group.”

The street team is a collaboration between the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Care in Drammen and Øvre Eiker, the Football Foundation, and Mjøndalen IF. This spring, the team will participate in the Østlandsligaen and a national tournament for street teams in Stavanger next autumn.
