City transport will initiate an internal investigation into the causes of the tram collision that occurred on Tuesday evening. The accident took place in the Itäkeskus area of Helsinki, where two trams operating on line 15 collided near the terminal stop. One passenger sustained minor injuries, and both trams were damaged. Tram services were temporarily suspended in the direction of Itäkeskus on Tuesday evening but resumed normal operations on Wednesday.
According to city transport, the departing tram collided with the side of the tram arriving at the stop at a low speed. Initial reports suggest that a switch on the tram line was still aligned in a way that directed the departing tram onto the same track as the arriving tram. City transport has announced that the investigation will review various technical recordings of the incident, interview the drivers of both trams, and explore possibilities of human and technical errors.
The tram service operating between Keilaniemi in Espoo and Itäkeskus in Helsinki has experienced several incidents throughout the year.
