Janne Puhakka, a 29-year-old former hockey player, died at his home in the Henttaa district of Espoo on Sunday due to gunshot wounds. His long-term partner, 66-year-old Rolf Nordmo, has informed police that he shot Puhakka, resulting in his death. Nordmo, a Norwegian, is suspected of murder and reportedly used a hunting shotgun as the weapon. Authorities have not disclosed whether the firearm was legally possessed, although they confirmed that Nordmo has permission to own it in Norway.
The Western Uusimaa Police Department has not provided information regarding Nordmo’s potential firearm licenses in Finland. To gain further understanding, we consulted Pasi Vuorenmaa, the head of firearm administration at the Finnish Police.
When asked about the requirements for obtaining a hunting weapon permit in Norway, Vuorenmaa stated that the evaluation is likely similar to that in Finland, focusing on the individual’s suitability, purpose of use, and the weapon’s appropriateness.
Regarding whether Norwegians can bring licensed firearms into Finland, he confirmed that permits issued in Norway, Sweden, Iceland, or Denmark allow for the transportation of specified firearms and ammunition, provided it is for a shooting or hunting event.
If a person intends to remain in Finland with a firearm for more than three months, they require a private import permit and must apply for a Finnish firearms license, meeting local regulations.
On the legal implications of firearms ownership without a permit, Vuorenmaa explained that possession against firearm legislation could lead to fines or imprisonment for up to two years, while deficiencies in storage could result in lesser charges.
