Many Icelanders are planning to pursue good weather this weekend, leading to packed campgrounds in the north and east of the country. However, there are still spots available for those who don’t need to connect to electricity.

The demand for camping sites for the weekend is high, but it is easier to find a spot in areas without electricity. Those planning outdoor activities in the north or east over the weekend may encounter full campgrounds in some places. Ásbyrgi, a popular camping destination, is fully booked for the weekend and campsite keepers are expecting a lively weekend.

The weather in East Iceland has been pleasant over the past few days and will continue to be mild over the weekend with temperatures well above twenty degrees Celsius. The weather will be slightly cooler in the north and northeast. Many have headed east to chase the warmth, and as a result, many popular campgrounds are beginning to fill up.

Ásbyrgi can accommodate about 500 people and is already full. “This is in line with what happens when the good weather comes, everyone comes, which is wonderful. But we need to have space for people and therefore we ask those who are traveling to check before they arrive at the campgrounds whether there is definitely space,” says Guðrún Jónsdóttir, a national park ranger.

A similar situation is happening in Egilsstaðir, Hallormsstaður, and Fjarðabyggð, where people are scrambling to secure a spot. At Hallormsstaður, mild weather is predicted for the next few days and many people have already set up their tents in Atlavík and Höfðavík by Lagarfljót.

In Vaglaskógur, it has been crowded and is almost certain to fill up over the weekend. On the other hand, in Hömrar in Akureyri, there are still a considerable number of vacant spots despite the lively atmosphere.

Whether or not reservations are required varies from place to place, but what applies to all locations is that the spots with access to electricity are the first to go. However, those who want to camp the old-fashioned way and leave their gadgets at home might find it easier to find a spot.
