Traffic levels in Reykjavik reach record highs as September sees unprecedented vehicle counts

Traffic levels in the Reykjavik capital region reached unprecedented highs in September, marking the busiest month since traffic measurements began in 2005. This September, the total average traffic exceeded 190,000 vehicles for the first time, surpassing the previous record of 187,000 set in June 2023.

Overall vehicle traffic in the capital area increased by 1.7% compared to September of the previous year, with a notable 2% rise on the Reykjanesbraut route, while traffic on the Vesturlandsveg remained stable. This growth was slightly less than forecasts had predicted, prompting expectations of a more than 3% annual increase in traffic.

From the beginning of the year, cumulative traffic has risen by 3.3% compared to the same period last year, correlating with a prior increase of 4.7%. Fridays saw the most traffic in September, while Sundays recorded the least, although Sunday traffic increased relatively more than on Mondays.

New traffic statistics indicate notable increases on key routes, with the Reykjanesbraut seeing the most significant growth. In this context, authorities assess ongoing trends in the region, highlighting the importance of managing transportation infrastructure effectively as traffic levels continue to rise.
