Bjarne Melgaard pursues legal action against Svein Roar Grande and Stein Lie in Oslo District Court
On Tuesday, renowned Norwegian contemporary artist Bjarne Melgaard appeared at the Oslo District Court to pursue legal action against his former partners Svein Roar Grande and Stein Lie. The dispute centers on an agreement made in November 2020, where Melgaard transferred ownership of significant portions of his artwork to Grande and Lie. He claims the art is valued at around 300 million NOK.
“I hope to gain clarity regarding what has transpired against me, my artwork, and the events during a challenging period of my life,” Melgaard stated.
The court will determine whether the agreement should be annulled, either fully or partially. The proceedings are scheduled from October 15 to November 1.
Melgaard believes he was deceived into signing the agreement under the impression that he owed Grande and Lie millions of kroner. “I’ve been told throughout that I owe 150 million kroner,” he mentioned. His attorneys argue that the basis for the agreement was flawed and question the figures involved.
Throughout the trial, it was highlighted that Melgaard has struggled with substance abuse and was in a vulnerable state during his collaborations with Grande and Lie. He admitted that he was unable to keep track of the numerous agreements he had signed, saying, “I was a drug addict. Of course, I couldn’t follow all of these contracts.”
Melgaard is seeking clarification on which artworks he actually owns and wants the court to prevent Grande and Lie from producing replicas of his work, as he fears this could diminish the value of his pieces.
In response, Grande and Lie deny Melgaard’s claims, asserting that he owes them debt and challenging the valuation of the artwork. They reportedly offered to sell the artwork back to Melgaard for the original amount paid, plus interest and costs, but claim he did not respond.
Melgaard expressed sadness over losing control of his life and the exploitation he feels has occurred. He is expected to testify in court next week.
